An emergency drill on liquefied ammonia leakage conducted at Isimba HPP
CWE’s Isimba Hydropower Project Management started an emergency drill on liquefied ammonia leakage of cooling system at 6p.m on June 4, 2016. Around 80 persons participated in the drill, and representatives from the Employer and the Engineer were also invited to oversee the activity.
The drill comprises 7 action units; namely, leading unit, technical unit, security unit, medical care unit, logistic unit, aftermath treatment unit, and investigation unit. Emergency response equipment and materials, such as fire-fighting trucks, ambulances, a rescue commanding vehicle, stretchers, gas masks, protective suits and gloves were mobilized. Processes during an ammonia leakage of cooling system on evacuation, first aid for poisoned person, initiation of emergency scheme, dilution of liquefied ammonia, and urgent repair of leakage spots were exercised.
The drill was considered a great success as all the expected goals were achieved, which was highly recognized by representatives from both the Employer and the Engineer. Through the drill, all participants were imparted with the knowledge of emergency response to ammonia leakage accident, and the safety awareness of all employees as well as coordination and commanding capability of the project management were improved.
