“Malaya” TBM Successfully Begins Work on the Kaysakat Water Supply Tunnel Project in the Philippines

Release time:2024-08-29

On August 29, the Kaysakat Water Supply Tunnel Design and Construction Project in the Philippines marked a significant milestone with the successful initial launch of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named “Malaya.” The ceremony, witnessed by project owners and consultants, signified the project’s acceleration into the main phase of construction, setting a positive trajectory for the tunnel’s progress and timely completion.

Over the past month, the project team has overcome numerous challenges including narrow mountain roads, poor road conditions, limited assembly space, and adverse weather conditions such as typhoons and landslides. Despite these obstacles, they managed to transport over 60 truckloads of TBM components to the site and completed the TBM’s assembly, acceptance, and commissioning within just 38 days. This TBM will be instrumental in constructing a 6.09-kilometer-long pressurized water conveyance tunnel with a lined internal diameter of 3.1 meters, aimed at alleviating the region’s water shortage and enhancing local living standards.
The Chinese name of TBM means “setting sail” and symbolizes the promising prospects of the Philippine market. It is aptly named “Malaya,” meaning “freedom” or “independence” in Tagalog (the local Filipino language). This name also reflects the owner’s high regard for Chinese technology and solutions, showcasing CWE’s capabilities and service levels in providing comprehensive solutions across the water sector.
