Release time:2025-06-04

The San Gabán III Hydropower Project, the first hydropower station invested in by Chinese enterprises in Peru, has officially entered commercial operation following the completion of all requisite tests. This significant milestone signifies the successful attainment of the Project’s construction goals, injecting new momentum into Peru’s clean energy development and regional power supply.

All technical specifications of the Project currently align with the stringent requirements set by the Committee for the Economic Operation of the National Interconnected System (COES), ensuring stable and reliable system performance.
Located in Puno Region, southeastern Peru, the San Gabán III Hydropower Project represents the final stage of a four-stage cascade development on the San Gabán River mainstream. It is a joint investment by China International Water & Electric Corp. (CWE), a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Group Company Limited (CCCG), China Three Gorges International Limited, a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation, and the China-LAC Cooperation Fund. The Project utilizes a low dam design with long-distance water diversion to concentrate hydraulic head for power generation. Its key components include the headworks, water diversion & power generation facilities, and transmission line infrastructure. The Project boasts a total installed capacity of 209.3 MW and a designed annual generation of 1.252 billion kWh. The station’s operation will significantly ease the electricity burden for over one million residents in southern Peru, providing a stable and reliable source of clean energy to support local economic and social development.
